Welcome to The Focus Group

The Focus Group is a Columbus, Ohio based club of serious, amateur, and professional photographers intent on achieving photographic excellence while enjoying good fellowship. The Focus Group is dedicated to the personal artistic growth of its individual members. Individually, we are diverse in background, heritage, culture and age. We share a common interest and love of photography. The group offers a comfortable and informal environment for the free exchange of information and ideas. We promote constructive criticism of our member's artwork. We also seek and encourage opportunities to exhibit photographic images.

Where and When We Meet

Join us on the second Friday of each month, beginning at 7 pm for socializing. The formal meeting begins at 7:30 pm. We meet in the Upper Arlington Municipal Building, at 3600 Tremont Rd (click for map)

About our meetings

We strive to accomplish a lot at each of our meetings which sometimes last to 10pm. We begin the meeting with a social period from 7pm to 7:30. Some members and guests like to gather together and talk about what's happened since the last time we met. Other members and gests gather around a PC and projector and discuss how to use various tools and capabilities of Photoshop. Each week we plan to focus on one aspect of Photoshop.

At 7:30 we have the obligatory business meeting. The goal is to use no more than 30 minutes to talk about our budget, our membership, upcoming exhibits, programs, or other events that affect our members.

We then have a program that lasts about an hour. Sometimes the program is presented by one of our members, and other times by invited guests. In all cases we strive to have programs that answer one or more of your questions (said or unsaid). We like our speakers to answer the "How to" type of questions with the overall goal of helping members improve their photographic experience.

We conclude each meeting with an image sharing session. During this period we invite members and guests to share images in print or projected form (digital or slides). It's always fun to see what our members have been up to and what new and exciting things they've been doing photographically. We strive to be concluded by 10pm.

PROGRAM

Friday July 11:             Neal Lauron is returning to The Focus Group!

You've seen his images! You've heard him describe how he makes his images! And you've heard the stories behind the images! Neal Lauron from the Columbus Dispatch will be returning to The Focus Group at the July 11, 2008 meeting.

At his presentation to the group in April, he offered to lead us in a critique session of member's works. That critique session is now scheduled for July 11, 2008. Bring several of your digital or print images to share with the group and hear from Neal how to potentially make them better images. The goal is to ensure that each member who brings works to the meeting has at least two images in the critique. If time permits, we will do more. It was fortuitous that Neal was available in July, and an opportunity too good to pass up!

In other news, the executive committee is currently seeking commitments from speakers on astronomy photography (wow!), underwater photography (wet!), and phototext art (you've got to see this: phototextcatalog.com). Watch the website for more news on upcoming programs.
